Grants

The Two Years To Cures Initiative evolved out of the The Charles E. Culpeper Biomedical Pilot Initiative Grants Program.  The Pilot Grant program, established in 1997, encouraged the investigation of novel ideas with the potential to lead to breakthroughs in medical research. These one-time grants of $25,000 for a 12-month period were designed to help researchers collect data to support creative hypotheses. Over the last nine years, this unique program invested more than $3.5 million dollars into 125 "hypothesis-based" grants, providing seed money to generate the data needed to propel these ideas into the conventional funding stream.

A number of these pilot grants made direct impacts on patients in a very short period of time, either by translating drugs from one disease to provide a better treatment in another disease, scientifically validating anecdotal successes of Western or Eastern medicine, or accelerating the use of a adrug or other therapy from late stage to early stage disease.  These high impact projects were so successful that Partnership for Cures Science and Executive Boards decided to alter the program to focus solely on these types of patient impact projects.
