cellsFDA Database Aims to Spark Orphan-Disease Drug Development-Wall Street Journal June 18th, 2010 by Amy Dockser Marcus.

For months now, the Food and Drug Administration has been trying novel ways of encouraging drug makers to develop drugs for rare diseases. Today the agency's Office of Orphan Products Development is launching a new gambit-a database of FDA-approved compounds and products that show promise in rare diseases too.  The concept is called "repurposing" - finding new ways to use products that have already been okayed by the FDA for some other use. Full Story.

Partnership for Cures and Goldman Philanthropic Partnerships were pioneers in Rediscovery Research™.  Our idea is catching on with the science industry, and now with the government!  Repurposing drugs is one of the four main Rediscovery Research™ methods we advocate to quickly, safely and affordably deliver solutions to patients!
PFC & The Longest Days of Golf
LDOG 2010 1The 2010 Longest Day of Golf-Chicago was a huge success!

18 golfers played from 5:30 am until 9:15 pm on June 21 to raise funds for prostate cancer research!

Our heartfelt thanks to the golfers and their friends,  their business contacts and their family members who support this charity event every year.

Special thanks to Board members Steve Goldsher, Kevin Krantz and Peter Kupferberg who provided the volunteer support to make this a spectacular event.

PFC would also like to extend a special thank you to Larry Snyder at ABC-7 Sports for donating prizes for the golfers, Ticketmaster for donating an executive suite for a White Sox game and Cubs tickets, Jaci Krandel at Jaci's Cookies for donating delicious cookies, and Bryn Mawr Country Club for allowing us to use their beautiful course.

The proceeds raised continue to support the two prostate cancer projects at University of Chicago and it's never too late to donate!

WhatshappeningwithpfcWhat's Happening At PFC
prostate cancerThis is the latest quarterly update on the progress in our Longest Day of Golf prostate cancer research projects.  Your support is already touching patients' live in less than one year...now that's IMPACT!

The goal of Drs. Eggener's and Oto's research is to test an MRI guided laser that can destroy prostate cancer cells without harming surrounding tissue.  Five patients have been treated so far with no complications and good results!  The patients ranged in age from the 50's to mid 70's....all very active and physiologically younger than their chronologic age.  The treatment takes about two hours. All patients walked out of the hospital the same day.  Thus far, no side effects. Patients returned to normal activities the following day.  All treatments are considered a success, and 6 month follow-ups are scheduled for each patient. For more information, click here.

The goal of Dr. Szmulewitz's research is to find markers on prostate cancer cells in the blood of patients to test new drugs and determine how well those drugs work.  Dr. Szmulewitz began to use chemicals that stick to different markers on the prostate cancer cells.  This allowed him to know which markers are important and how easily the prostate cancer cells can be found in the blood.  This is the first time that a researcher has been able to evaluate more than one marker on the surface of a prostate cancer cell at the same time.  This should lead to individualized prostate cancer treatment for patients that don't respond to traditional treatment.
