PFC in the News
Sharon BeleySteven Braun

PFC has once again been quoted as an authority on the pages of Newsweek which will be published in the May 31, 2010 magazine.  Sharon Begley, a respected science columnist, contacts PFC regularly for information, resources and validation.  You can get an early start reading the article now!

Desperately Seeking Cures, May 14th, 2010- From 1996 to 1999, the U.S. food and Drug Administration approved 157 new drugs. In the comparable period a decade later-that is, from 2006 to 2009-the agency approved 74. Not among them were any cures, or even meaningfully effective treatments, for Alzheimer's disease, lung or pancreatic cancer, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, or a host of other afflictions that destroy lives. Diabetes Research the Big Winner
cellsThe Blues Traveler concert was a great success with over 1300 people in attendance!  With the help of our the Exsulin Corporation, funding partner Friends United for Juvenile Diabetes, Board members Bobby and Lori Miller, Jeff Sodikoff and the team at Platform One Entertainment, we were able to raise $10,000. Check out all the media coverage we received, including over 10 million media impressions and $250,000 in media value thanks to Platform One! Thank you to all those that came and/or made a donation. Special thanks to Alex Lionberg and Jeremy Bloom for helping us create the video presentation!

Partnership for Cures made a grant to Exsulin Corporation, with funds provided by Friends United for Juvenile Diabetes Research and the Miller Diabetes Fund, to support development of a novel breakthrough therapy aimed at the underlying cause of insulin-dependent Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The therapy, branded as Exsulin™, uses a naturally-occurring molecule that helps the pancreas make new insulin-producing cells which could lead to reversal of the effects of diabetes. Exsulin Corporation is the sponsor of a Phase II clinical trial currently enrolling patients with established Type 1 diabetes (also known as juvenile diabetes) at the Mayo Clinic and McGill University. Exsulin is the first and only islet regeneration therapy in Phase II development.

As of May 24, 2010 almost half of the patients have been enrolled in the study.  All Subjects enrolled in the study have established Type 1 Diabetes and so far have provided positive feedback, although the final scientific information will not be available until the end of the study.  Based on the current study, the Exsulin Corporation is planning to file with Health Canada and the FDA for approval of a combination trial with Exsulin and a repurposed immune modulator.

It's still not too late to make a donation!

Dogs for Cures logoOur funding partner Dogs for Cures Foundation took part in the 14th Annual South Sound Walk to Cure Diabetes, on May 8th at UW Tacoma! They formed Team Liam to help raise funds and awareness of what the organization has been able to do for Liam through his diabetic alert dog Max.

microscopeWe have some exciting early information from the research we are managing for our international funding partner in Britain, the Myrovlytis Trust.  Dr. Andrew R. Tee and his team at the Institute of Medical Genetics at Wales College of Medicine are comparing the growth of normal and cancerous cells. By starving the cancer cells energy supply they were are able to stop them from growing, while the normal cells were still able to grow. They next want to examine whether these treatments will selectively kill the cancer cells.  Although they are examining drug effects on a cancer cell derived from a patient with Birt-Hogg-Dubé, this work is transferable to many other solid tumor cancers that fit a similar profile, i.e., the cancer cells are highly dependent on glucose as a food source and they survive in low oxygen conditions.
