Call for Research-Lung Cancer Grant Opportunity
LUNGEVITY FOUNDATION and PARTNERSHIP FOR CURES call upon members of the clinical and research communities to collaborate with us to find new ideas to directly and significantly impact patients afflicted with lung cancer. These ideas can take any form that can touch patients ASAP: CREATE A CURE, PRODUCE A BETTER TREATMENT, HELP WITH EARLIER DIAGNOSIS; REDUCE THE RATE OF RELAPSE; IMPROVE QUALITY AND LENGTH OF LIFE.
THIS CALL FOR IDEAS can include testing existing FDA approved drugs or other available compounds for repurposing to help these patients, alone or in combination with current therapies. We are already funding a project that led to a clinical trial adding an older FDA approved drug to a new FDA approved drug regimen that increases the percentage of patients who receive a benefit AND lengthens the benefit time, with little additional cost or morbidity. These repurposing research ideas allow clinicians to decide whether to begin using the treatments on patients as soon as the results are published.
Research could also test an existing non-drug therapy that might treat lung cancer patients, including new uses for medical devices and validation of integrative medicine techniques. For example, we previously received a project that would teach Qi Gong to lung cancer patients to control breathing during chest x-rays.
Idea submissions could also be for drugs or other therapies that are not yet approved for use on human subjects in the US but are already be in use in other countries.
You are also welcome to submit ideas that could create and test new guidelines for existing procedures that could be instrumental in improving the outcomes for lung cancer patients.
IF YOU KNOW A CLINICIAN OR RESEARCHER WHO NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GRANT OPPORTUNITY, PLEASE PASS IT ALONG!
*Please note: this "Call for Ideas" is not a request for full research proposals for grant funding. We are requesting ideas for translational research projects, which will be screened by the Foundation Staff, Science Advisors and Funders, and then specific invitations for a more formal application will be made very quickly to those who submit the most promising ideas.
IDEA SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Ideas must be submitted electronically to Bruce@4Cures.org. Preferred file formats are *.doc or *.pdf, but we will accept submissions that come solely in the body of an e-mail. Paper submission can not be accepted.
Submissions must be no longer than 1500 words (about two [2] pages excluding literature references) and utilize no smaller than 11 point type (font) size.
Submissions must include the following elements:
- Project Summary Statement - Briefly describe the idea for one more research project and provide justification for the suggestions with background information. If you have more than one idea, please send each as a separate submission.
- Clinical Impact - Describe how the research would result in a direct and significant impact on lung cancer patients.
- Timeline - Provide a timeline required to complete the research, which cannot be more than 24 months.
- Estimated Costs - Please provide an overall budget number for the entire project. Budget explanation is NOT required at this time. The funder has tentatively set a $100,000 total project budget limit, and is eager to fund more than one project if possible. For other disease funders we received research ideas that cost no more than $25,000/year for 1-2 years.
Grantees can received 50% of requested funds through this grant opportunity. The funders require a 50% match from the institution or other resources. No more than 10% of the total grant request can be used for institutional overhead. In other words, a $55,000 total project cost would include $5000 for institutional overhead and $50,000 for direct research. The institution would contribute $25,000 and the funder will contribute $25,000.
- Key Literature References - References to publications supporting the suggestion may be included.
- Contact Information - Please send your contact information, including cell phone and e-mail addresses.
