Profile: Bruce Bloom

Dr. Bruce E. Bloom holds a JD from Chicago Kent College of Law, a DDS from University of Illinois Medical Center, and a BS in Biology from University of Illinois Urbana. Dr. Bloom’s business and entrepreneurial experience spans both not-for-profit and for profits work in medical research, law, healthcare, insurance, regulatory affairs, product development, food service, art, education, and public speaking. He is currently President and Chief Science Officer of Partnership for Cures, a 501c3 that raises funds for medical Rediscovery Research that reuses, recombines and reapplies existing science and medicine to quickly, safely and affordably create new treatments for patients with catastrophic diseases. Dr. Bloom and the leadership team at Partnership for Cures bring funders and researchers together to inspire and carry out Rediscovery Research projects that often touch patients’ lives in two years or less by repurposing drugs and devices, modifying treatment protocols and scientifically testing clinical observations. Hundreds of thousands of patients with life-altering diseases already have new and better Rediscovery Research treatments as a direct result of the work of Partnership for Cures. Dr. Bloom was elected an International Ashoka Social Entrepreneur Fellow in 2009. Ashoka recognizes social entrepreneurs for their system-changing solutions to the world’s most urgent social problems. Dr. Bloom joins the ranks of 2,800 Fellows in over 60 countries around the world who are working for social change to improve society. Dr. Bloom is an adjunct faculty member at Kendall College, has been a lecturer at the University of Illinois Chicago for 15 years, and was a senior lecturer at Northwestern University for 6 years. Dr. Bloom has taught Business Law and Risk Management to thousands of healthcare and other professionals since 1985. Dr. Bloom currently serves as a the Chair of the Charles E. Culpeper Science Advisory Boards, a Board member of the Menninger Clinic Foundation, Vice-Chair of the Kendall College School of Business Advisory Board, a Board member of the Kendall College Charitable Trust, a Medical Research Advisor to the LUNGevity Foundation, a Policy Advisor to AccelerateProgress.org, a Board member of the Judy Hirsch Foundation, a Science Reviewer for the ACS Lung Cancer Grant Program and the CHEST Foundation Grant Program, a Final Competition Judge for the PROPEL Business Plan Competition at iBIO IndEx, and a Client Advisor to Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Dr. Bloom is a host of the Clinician’s Roundtable heard on ReachMD.com and on XM 160, and a facilitator for Pathways to Successful Living. In the 1990’s as Senior VP-Healthcare Professional Liability at both Kemper Casualty Company and CNA HealthPro, he was responsible for all corporate functions including sales and marketing, operations, finance, IT, legal, risk management, product development, HR and regulatory affairs. Dr. Bloom served as the International Director of Professional Relations and Clinical Affairs at Bausch and Lomb Oral Care Division, where he supervised clinical research and participated in product development and regulatory affairs. Dr. Bloom was the Associate Director of Clinical Research for the National Patent Development Corporation and Vice-President of the consulting firm American Dental Examiners. Dr. Bloom founded two successful art businesses and owned and operated a thriving franchise food business. He resides in Deerfield, IL with his wife of 30+ years, Stacy, enjoying the launch of their two grown children, Aly and Ty. Bruce is an amateur magician, hockey goalie, marathon runner, and has portrayed Drosselmeier in the annual Nutcracker Ballet in the northern suburbs of Chicago since 1997. |
